Learn more about our mission to make Rotterdam the world's Bitcoin Capital

icon Embracing the future

Rotterdam embracing Bitcoin is Rotterdam embracing the future. Rotterdam is and has always been a city that is at the forefront of innovation. It boasts the headquarters of some of the biggest companies in the world, such as Royal Dutch Shell and Unilever and with its growing Bitcoin community it can strongly position itself as a frontrunner in this emerging market. Not only will this make its economy more diverse and resilient, it also creates a plethora of opportunities for young talents and investors. It will be interesting to see what kind of benefits Rotterdam can reap from this movement in the near future.

icon Benefits for everyone

Adopting Bitcoin not only benefits merchants, it benefits everyone visiting Rotterdam. From its residents to tourists, everyone can enjoy the growing Bitcoin Community. Merchants get paid 24/7, enjoy no transaction fees and are completely protected against Bitcoin value swings. Consumers enjoy quick, seamless payment, possible from any device without the need of carrying a wallet with bankcards or cash. For tourists that come from outside the Eurozone, the possibility of paying with Bitcoin saves a lot of money and trouble exchanging local currencies for euros.

icon Long term importance

Bitcoin and its underlying Blockchain Technology are growing in an unprecedented pace. Venture Capital Investment in Bitcoin related start-ups is expected to surpass the 1 Billion Dollar mark before the end of 2015. In comparison, internet start-ups acquired only 250 million dollar in 1995. Silicon Valley and Wall Street are both on top of Bitcoin and the Blockchain. Hence it makes complete sense to embrace this technology in a city, as a city. Attempting to create a thriving Bitcoin community and attract business, investors and employment. To achieve this goal, massive merchant adaptation is an important pillar.

    * What was the reason to start accepting Bitcoin?
I have always been a supporter of alternative ways of paying outside the banking system and with relatively low costs, for the banks have enormous power over people. When I found out about the advantages of Bitcoin during a night in 2013 in café the Waag in Delft (which as a matter of fact also accepts Bitcoin). I became convinced about this technology. This, for me, was the reason to start accepting Bitcoin. It immediately made me the first hotel in the Netherlands to accept Bitcoin.
